There's more to pictures than going to watch the most recent hit at the multi plex. Independent filmmakers need to showcase their work, whether or not it is a feature film, a short or a documentary. There's a practical side to showing films at film holidays.
It gives directors and producers a chance to network and to sell their work to distributors.
It's frequently a struggle, particularly for someone that is making their first feature, to find funding for their project and distribution issues can add to that struggle. Some holidays like to follow themes, like lesbian and gay, animation, youngsters's films or flicks from a certain country or genus. Most film holidays however, like to show a mixture and attract as many folks as possible. The majority of the screenings happen at the Sundance ski destination in Utah, so named by actor Robert Redford who is terribly concerned in the holiday. The holiday commenced as a small scale affair for the independent sector but it is now attended by celebrity actors and directors.
The United Kingdom has an energetic participation in film holidays. The biggest continually run holiday in the world is the Edinburgh one and the biggest holiday in the country is the Raindance Holiday in London. Beginning 1992, it came at the right time to push English independent film, which is respected thru the globe. Patrons of the holiday include Ewan McGregor, Terry Gilliam and Ken Loach. Films from across the world that went on to world success have been shown too, for example the Blair Hag Project and Pulp Fiction.
